Abbey Lane students go on Seashore Safari

Kindergarten students from Abbey Lane Elementary School in the Levittown Public Schools developed an appreciation for local marine life with an in-school Seashore Safari workshop on Jan. 16 and 17. Provided by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, the workshop was led by Tracy Marcus, marine educator and Sea Explorers Marine Camp director.

The students were split into small groups and received a tray with water. Marcus introduced different marine animals such as clams, blue and ribbed mussels, oysters, different types of sea snails and crabs. The kindergartners watched in amazement while the animals came to life right in front of them. After discussing each creature, the kindergartners were able to hold and touch the marine life. Students had a great time exploring and asked questions along the way. Marcus encouraged all of the students to keep an eye out for these creatures the next time they are by the water and to educate their family and friends on what they learned.
